History of Capel Iago Sawmill
Capel Iago means James’ Chapel in Welsh. It is thought that there was once a monastery on this site which dates back over a thousand years and that the vestry of St Peters Church in the local village of Llanybydder was built from the stone of the monastery and the rest was used to build Capel Iago farm house. There are many Yew trees on the farm with one being right next to the farm house. There is also another older tree on the land which was recently dated by an expert who thought that it is approximately 1200 years old.
The Stephens family have lived in Capel Iago since 1979. Family Stephens originally worked the farm rearing mainly sheep. In the late 80s we gave up farming and the late John Stephens set up a small successful saw mills. Capel Iago Sawmills dealt mainly in reclaimed timber, lovely oak beams and hard wood flooring. The saw mills closed in 2010 when John lost his battle with cancer however we still have large amounts of beautiful timber which we are creating a range of products from.
Although the sawmills itself is no longer producing timber at Capel Iago we continue to trade in wood products. We produce a wide range of products usually made to people’s specific requirements. We make and sell furniture including rustic coffee and dining tables, breakfast bars, shelves and unique coat hooks. We also build log cabins and shepherd's huts and we have currently developed the towable Shepherds Huts . We believe that they are the only ' Towable Shepherd's Huts' in the UK that can be towed with a car (no 4x4 required). All of our products are based upon the vision of the late John Stephens which is to use reclaimed products and to use locally sourced wood. Thus our products are a blend of old, antique or vintage items mixed with new locally sourced and seasoned wood from West Wales.
