Capel Iago
means James's Chapel.

There's thought to have been a monastery here over a thousand years ago. When it fell, the vestry of St Peter's Church in nearby Llanybydder was built from its stone, and what was left went into Capel Iago farmhouse. A yew tree still stands beside the house. Another, further into the land, was recently dated by an expert at roughly twelve hundred years old.

The Stephens family have farmed and worked this land since 1979. When sheep farming gave way in the late eighties, the late John Stephens opened a small sawmill here, working reclaimed oak beams and hardwood flooring. It closed in 2010, when John lost his fight with cancer, but the timber he left behind never ran out.

Tim and Rhiannon still build from it today: rustic tables, shelves, coat hooks, log cabins and the handcrafted, bespoke shepherd huts Rustic Huts is known for. Every hut is made by hand in West Wales, using old, reclaimed or locally grown timber and traditional craftsmanship. It’s a tradition that continues today, creating unique shepherd huts in Wales for customers across the UK and Europe.

Every hut starts the same way,
then becomes yours.

All two metres wide, built on a repurposed towable galvanised chassis, then finished to whatever length and specification suits the person collecting it. Below is what comes as standard and from there, choose from a full list of upgrades and extras on your interactive quote, until the hut in front of you looks and feels entirely your own.

Roof & frame

A traditional galvanised corrugated roof, curved and overhanging above the door, carried on gallow-style timber roof supports. Timber cladding to the exterior, with the walls, ceiling and floor fully insulated.

Windows & door

A timber window set wherever you'd like it, hung with traditional monkey-tail catches, and a solid timber stable door with black period hinges and a ring latch.

Interior & floor

Spruce cladding to the ceiling, finished in hard wax oil, above a solid timber floor, never laminate. Walls are lined and finished in white or magnolia, with traditional square-edged skirting throughout.

The little touches

A heart worked into a bracket, a curled iron catch, a plaque marking it as one of ours. Small hand-finished details, on top of a repurposed towable chassis with pneumatic tyres and working brakes, light enough for an ordinary car to pull.

It starts with you telling us about your hut – simply send us your details and a list of the features you have in mind. For a £25 admin fee, we’ll build your interactive quote around your budget and style, which you can then refine by choosing from our full range of extras until your bespoke shepherd hut feels entirely yours.

Once you’re happy, we build your handcrafted shepherd hut here at Capel Iago, hand-finishing it with a mixture of new products along with repurposed antique and vintage timbers on a towable chassis. Every hut is made to order, giving you the freedom to create a shepherd hut in Wales that suits exactly what you have in mind.

Finally, we deliver your finished hut anywhere across the UK or Europe, with help getting your shepherd hut levelled and into position when it arrives.

Our Shepherd’s Huts are priced at £1,417 per square metre.

Only a deposit is required to secure your build. The remaining balance is paid in easy staged payments as your Shepherd’s Hut progresses through construction.

Every Rustic Huts Shepherd’s Hut is built around an aluminium frame, making it lightweight, exceptionally strong and fully mobile.

Unlike many traditional timber-framed huts, our design allows the hut to be towed behind a suitable vehicle while providing outstanding strength and durability.

Over the past ten years we’ve personally delivered Shepherd’s Huts to gardens, farms, woodland retreats, glamping sites, holiday parks and private homes throughout the UK and Europe.

Every Shepherd’s Hut receives its own Welsh girl’s name, engraved onto a complimentary Welsh slate plaque and fitted above the entrance door before delivery. The name remains a surprise until your hut arrives.

The iAGOBURY logo: a guitar and DJ turntables badge reading 'iAGOBURY, Camp. Groove. Escape.'

Discover who built Jyngl

Deekline DJing on a multi-deck setup at a nightclub, lit by red overhead lighting rigs.
A dictionary-style definition card: 'jyngl' (JUN-gull), noun, Welsh. 1. A dense, wild place where things grow freely, loudly and without much regard for the rules. 2. A genre of music built from breakbeats, basslines and soundsystem culture. Best experienced loud. 3. The natural habitat of Deekline.
An engraved slate plaque reading 'Jyngl, rustichuts.co.uk', mounted above the hut's front door.
Jyngl, a sage-green shepherd's hut with a timber door, pitched at a festival campsite with a big top tent in the background.
Inside Jyngl, showing a long oak worktop with a sink, the front door, a sliding barn door and a built-in desk.
Jyngl, a sage-green shepherd's hut with a timber stable door and window, parked at a festival campsite among caravans and tents.

Jyngl was designed and built by Rustic Huts at Capel Iago in West Wales — a small, independent workshop where we build individual spaces for people who want something a little different from an ordinary room, studio or cabin.

Jyngl actually began with music.

It started at iAGOBURY

Every year, Capel Iago becomes home to something slightly less sensible than hut building.

iAGOBURY is our small charity music & arts festival in the hills of West Wales, bringing together live musicians, artists, DJs, friends and performers for a day and night of music where everyone can camp, groove & escape!

When Deekline played at iAGOBURY, the chassis that would eventually become Jyngl was still at the very beginning of its build.

In fact, he played his set standing on the trailer base, which we transformed into a temporary DJ booth exactly by the doorway of Jyngl, looking out towards the crowd.

There were no walls, no roof, no studio and certainly no Jyngl.

But standing on that chassis gave him something surprisingly useful — a real feel for the size of the space and what could potentially be created inside it.

That conversation eventually became Jyngl.

From empty trailer to creative space

Jyngl wasn’t designed as a generic shepherd’s hut with some DJ equipment added afterwards. It was designed around the person who would actually use it.

A proper production desk. Space for screens and studio monitors. Somewhere to sit with other artists. A large opening side window that can completely change the character of the hut. A kitchen and wetroom so the space can work independently. And enough personality that it doesn’t feel like an office in a wooden box.

The result is somewhere Deekline can work, produce, collaborate, play and open the window and turn the whole hut into something else entirely.

That’s the bit of hut building we enjoy most.

Huts for people who create things

Jyngl isn’t the first creative space we’ve built.

We’ve made a range of huts over the years, but increasingly we’ve found ourselves building spaces for musicians, performers and other creative people who need somewhere of their own.

For singer and musician Laura Jayne Hunter, we built Moli — a compact music-production hut which now lives at her home in South London. Inside a relatively small footprint, Moli incorporates a guitar rack, keyboard corner and dedicated vocal area, creating a proper working music space just a few steps from home.

Jyngl is a very different hut. And that’s really the point.

We don’t really have a standard model

We build at Capel Iago in West Wales, and almost everything starts with a conversation rather than a catalogue. Someone might need:

  • A writing room
  • A production studio
  • A rehearsal space
  • A place to paint
  • A green room
  • A tiny office away from the house
  • A room where three musicians can sit around a desk at two o’clock in the morning arguing about a baseline

We work backwards from what you actually want to do inside it. The position of the desk, windows, acoustics, storage, lighting, power, seating and even where somebody naturally looks when they’re working can matter far more than choosing something from a list of standard options.

The outside can still look like a Rustic Hut. The inside can be almost anything.

Built at Capel Iago

There’s probably something appropriate about these spaces being made here. Capel Iago is tucked away in the countryside of West Wales, surrounded by fields, woodland and the old sawmill where Rustic Huts grew from.

For most of the year we’re building. Occasionally we’re putting on a festival. Often the two worlds overlap. Musicians visit. Ideas get discussed. Someone stands on an unfinished chassis and starts imagining what could fit on it.

Jyngl is one of the things that came out of that.

Could we build yours?

If you’ve found this page because you’ve just been inside Jyngl, you’ve already seen considerably more than most people who contact us.

We don’t have a musician’s studio package, an artist’s package or a celebrity range.

Tell us what you’d like the space to do. We’ll work out the rest.

Derwen – A Rustic Hut Retreat
Derwen, a shepherd's hut retreat with a hot tub and decked seating area surrounded by trees.

Derwen is a unique retreat in the heart of our old sawmill.

Once used by the late John Stephens as a timber-drying room where timber was wheeled inside on railway tracks. In the later years it became a sawmill staff room and timber store. We’ve now carefully transformed Derwen into a warm, characterful hideaway, preserving her industrial past while adding the comfort and craftsmanship you’d expect from a Rustic Hut.
